Life amongst the graves
We paid a little visit to the community living in the slum of Smor San ! The particularity of this slum is that it is situated on the exact location of a cemetary. Indeed, its inhabitants installed their homes and live amongst the colorful graves of an old graveyard ! Important to know here is that no Cambodian people are buried here, since the khmer culture is opposed to cemeteries and preaches that people should be burned.
We began with a distribution of hygiene supplies: some toothpaste, toothbrushes, some soap and clothes. We had enough goodies for at least 120 people, everybody was thus very happy because they all could manage to get something of their own !
Then, we went to the house of a disabled family taken over by Shanty Town Spirit, including a grandmother, a mother and her four children. We talked with them for a while and they showed us around their little habitation. The oldest boy and the grandmother are the only members able to bring money to the family. The grandmother washes dishes and the boy manages to find small jobs around the area, despite his disability. Maira, with the help of Shanty Town Spirit, provides them basic supplies to support them (clothes, hygiene products, medicine, food).
After that, we met another grandmother from the community, who told us that she had problems with her eyes and that she needed help. We noticed that she might be needing a cataract surgery. We spoke with her and managed to get her one since then. It is thanks to the dedication of volunteers and the generosity of the donors that grandmothers like her are able to be healed and to live freely in dignity !
Everybody deserves the right to have access to hygiene, health products and decent clothes.

ART ACTIVITY IN SHANTY TOWN With Terry Douglas and Unseen Youth
Wonderful afternoon with the kids in one of our Shanty Town.
It is for the 3rd year now that we receive the visit of the Pastor Terry Douglas together with the Unseen Youth Group. Visit around arts, body painting, dancing, singing.
It is a real pleasure for the kids to take part of those activities. They recognized Terry Douglas and the Group. A very nice welcome had been reserved for them.

One afternoon with Credit Bureau Cambodge at the movie
Credit Bureau Cambodia (CBC) is the leading provider of financial information, analytical solutions, and credit reporting services to financial institutions and consumers in the Kingdom of Cambodia ; but Credit bureau Cambodge, is not only a bank, but one of their responsibilities, is also to care and give back to the society as well.
They have various activities and one of them is to support our Association, once a year and provide the children in the Shanty Town regarding their education or any other area that they would need help.
Last year it was for education, CBC provided them a full kit (uniforms, bags, shoes) and this year it was oriented on the hygiene products.
On 2nd December, they gave the opportunities to 44 kids from our Shanty Town, together with the children of their employees to attend a movie at the Sovanna Shopping Center, at Prime Cineplex.
The journey starts with the trip in the tuk tuk, 9 in total
Followed by « trip » in the escalators, none of the kids never ever used this kind of escalators, they spent time to play with it.

The movie starts, it was so nice to see those kids, unfamiliar with the 3Ds movies, trying to catch the ball on the screen. It looks like magic to all of them.
At the end of the movie, each kid received a full hygiene kit :
- Tooth brush and dentifrice
- Moskito kit
- A blanket
- Tiger balm
- Etc…
Then each one went back with the tuk tuk and return home full of joy after this amazing afternoon.

Un après - midi au cinéma avec Crédit Bureau Cambodge
Crédit Bureau Cambodge (CBC) n’est pas seulement tourner sur le profit, mais également à soin de pouvoir redonner à la Société. CBC a donc pour cela diverses actions sociales, afin de pouvoir reverser un peu à la Communauté et à la Société. Ils prennent à cœur de développer leur profit pour pouvoir étendre ces actions sociales.
Depuis l’an dernier, Crédit Bureau Cambodge a, a cœur de donner quelque chose aux enfants. L’an dernier c’était un kit pour l’éducation (uniformes, sacs d’écoles, baskets etc…) et cette année, c’était un kit d’hygiène.
Ainsi en date du 2 décembre, nous avons été invités par le Crédit Bureau Cambodge, CBC sur Phnom Penh, afin de permettre à 44 enfants provenant des Shanty Town, plus les enfants des employés, de participer à une sortie au cinéma pour aller voir « Ralph, breaks the Internet » en 3D.
Les enfants sont allés au Sovanna Shopping Center, au Prime Cineplex. L’aventure a commencée dans les tuk tuk, 9 au total.
Pour se poursuivre ensuite dans les escaliers roulants, car n’ayant pas l’habitude de monter par ce type d’escalier, ils ont pris du temps pour jouer avec.
Crédit Bureau Cambodge a ensuite procédé à la distribution des pop-corn et coca. Sokear avait préparé quelques jeux afin de faire patienter les plus jeunes.
Une fois installés, après les différents discours :

Le film a commencé, projection en 3D, tellement réel que les enfants voulaient attraper la balle qui apparaissaient à l’écran. Il y a eu alors un grand brouhaha dans toute la salle. Quelle magie que cette projection. C’était une grande première pour tous.
A la fin de la projection, chaque enfant a reçu un sac avec à l’intérieur :
Chacun est ensuite rentré avec les tuk tuk respectifs, tellement heureux de cette aventure.

Avoir confiance en l’avenir même si l’on vient de la rue / Is it possible to have confidence in life when we come from the street ?
Comment peut-on être confiant dans l’avenir si nos chances sont limitées ?
Comment se dire que quand nous vivons dans la rue, nous avons forcément très peu de chance d’avoir un jour une belle maison, une voiture, ou des rêves ?
Comment pouvoir imaginer un autre avenir que dans un quartier pauvre ?
Eh bien OUI, tout est possible, et l’exemple vivant de Arun (Prak Phirun) …. En est une preuve.
Arun est un homme de 37 ans qui s’est donné les moyens de bien réussir sa vie. Et pourtant cela n’était pas facile. Au départ sa famille était aisée, vivait dans une belle maison, en province, dans un village. Son père était dans les affaires, (il était dans la vente de bois) et par malchance, (ou par faute du destin qui a mis sur ses pas un homme vil), un de ses partenaires l’a trahi, et tout a basculé dans l’horreur. Plus d’argent, plus de maison, plus de quoi vivre proprement.
C’était en 1995, ils ont dû déménager et s’installer à Oudong, à 40 km environ de Phnom Penh. Son père a fait comme il a pu pour continuer à subvenir aux besoins de toute la famille (deux épouses, sept enfants au total).
Pour arriver à aider son père, il a développé, pendant cette période, un petit marché à l’école. Pendant ses heures de liberté, il allait collecter les os des vaches, qu’il pouvait se faire acheter. Et grâce à cet argent, il achetait des jouets, qu’il revendait aux enfants de son école. (Intelligent et pragmatique). Arun était dans les premiers de sa classe, quand il n’était pas le premier.
En passant dans les classes supérieures, en grade 6, Arun, alors âgé de 10 ans, devait tous les jours effectuer 15km à pieds pour aller à l’école, sous la pluie, sous le soleil brulant. La route était longue, et c’était très difficile.
L’émotion est encore très présente, car ses yeux s’embrouillent de larmes, et quelques minutes lui sont nécessaires pour pouvoir continuer son récit.
Cela à durer 4 années. De longues heures pour aller s’instruire, mais Arun savait que c’était le SEUL moyen pour lui de s’en sortir.
Il n’y avait pas beaucoup de nourriture, et il lui a été extrêmement difficile de pouvoir terminer ses années d’école supérieure.
C’est alors qu’il s’est fait la promesse :
« JAMAIS JE NE REVIVRAI CELA, JE VAIS TOUT FAIRE POUR M’EN SORTIR ET AVOIR UNE BELLE VIE »
Son père voyant que le potentiel d’Arun, lui a donné 10000 riels, (ce qui équivaut aujourd’hui à très peu d’argent mais à l’époque c’était un bien précieux), pour lui permettre de venir sur Phnom Penh, rejoindre son oncle, qui travaillait comme gardien pour la Compagnie d’Aviation appartenant à la famille Royale.
Il avait ainsi un endroit où dormir la nuit, mais pendant la journée, il devait sortir. Donc pour pouvoir manger, il a un peu utilisé de son argent tous les jours pour se nourrir (300 riels par jour comme budget, cela équivaut de nos jours à 0.10 centimes).
Mais peu à peu, il a su se faire connaitre, il effectuait tous les travaux possibles : laver les voitures, nettoyer les sols, couper l’herbe, etc… Et c’est ainsi que trois mois plus tard, Mr B…. lui a demandé de devenir à son tour gardien.
Son salaire était alors presque entièrement dévoué à ses études. Sur un total de 40 dollars par mois, il avait réparti ses dépenses :
- 15 dollars pour la nourriture
- 18 dollars pour apprendre, à lire, parler et écrire l’anglais (3 heures de cours par semaine)
- Et le restant pour les achats des livres
(C’est à cet époque, qu’il a fait, entre autre, un marché avec l’un des gardes possédant un dictionnaire khmer/anglais, pour lequel il nettoyait la voiture, afin d’obtenir ce trophée. UN MOIS de nettoyage de voiture !!!!!!!!)
Il n’avait pas de frais de logement, car il résidait avec un membre de la famille Royale.
En 1999 ; âgé alors de 18 ans, qu’il a commencé à travailler comme gardien pour la famille Royale. Deux années plus tard, il faisait la connaissance d’Ermine Norodom, dont il avait été désigné comme garde attitré. Et ce jusqu’en 2002.
Ayant été remarqué pour ses qualités d’analyse, et son intelligence, ainsi que le fait qu’il parle très bien l’anglais, un poste dans l’administration lui a été proposé en 2002. Pendant deux années, il a travaillé en tant qu’assistant administratif au sein de la Compagnie, mais malheureusement, en 2006, au vu de la faillite de cette compagnie, il a dû trouver un autre emploi.
Il a ainsi, effectuer deux années dans une autre compagnie, cette fois comme adjoint dans la vente. Mais là encore, la faillite ayant pris possession de cette entreprise, il a été contraint de faire autre chose.
Ayant trouvé emploi au sein d’une entreprise de Pizza, il a appris toutes les ficelles de ce métier, de la fabrication des pizzas, à la vente, ainsi que toute la partie marketing. Il avait deux emplois, celui dans la Pizza, et celui comme gardien auprès d’Ermine.
Il a ensuite continué son ascension :
- 2008-2009 : comme Chargé de la publicité auprès de la English Learning School ;
- 2009-2010 : Restaurant Soksabay, (mais le travail était difficile et étant un bar de nuit, trop d’alcool et de déviance)
C’est enfin quand Ermine a débuté son travail dans son hôtel en 2011 « Hôtel le Marais » que sa vie s’est nettement améliorée.
A la fin du contrat et à la fermeture de l’Hôtel, Arun s’est alors décidé a commencé sa propre compagnie dans les ventes immobilières. Au début c’était difficile, mais petit à petit il a vu ses revenus augmentés. Par la force de son travail, et son caractère. Il n’a jamais compté ses heures de travail. Seul lui importait la promesse qu’il s’était faite.
Il a actuellement 13 employés qu’il forme lui-même, Il leur donne les moyens de mieux vivre, et leur apprend à bien travailler. Il ne donne pas, il enseigne, informe, donne des commencements de solution, mais n’effectue pas le travail pour eux.
Il est fier et il peut l’être. Aujourd’hui il gagne bien sa vie, possède une maison. Une voiture. Son fils va à l’école. Son épouse travaille. Il a le sourire, et il affirme que s’il avait plus d’argent il ferait encore plus de charité.
Il travaille au sein de Shanty Town Spirit, depuis le début. C’est le Directeur Administratif, et réponds toujours présent quand Ermine a besoin de lui.
Son travail auprès d’Ermine, réside tout autant en tant que Directeur administratif, que bénévolat sur le terrain. Dans les Shanty Town, toutes les personnes sont à l’écoute, car elles savent qu’il a vécu une situation similaire. Mais sans jamais se laisser emporter par la misère.
Il est beaucoup plus à même de comprendre ces gens, Il arrive à cerner leurs besoins.
Les enfants sont à l’écoute. Il aime leur donner la soif d’apprendre pour pouvoir faire comme lui. Il donne l’image de la réussite après la misère.
Ermine aime à dire : « Nous travaillons bien ensemble, nous nous comprenons, et il m’aide énormément. C’est un homme au grand cœur, qui ne regarde pas à ce qu’il pourrait recevoir en retour de ce qu’il donne. Il donne pour le bonheur de donner tout simplement ».
Et Arun quand il parle d’Ermine, dit exactement la même chose, « une personne au grand cœur, et qui donne sans jamais chercher à recevoir en retour ».
Pour l’avenir, ce qu’il souhaite pour son fils, surnommé « Stéphane », mais son nom de naissance : Saahs Bot (puissance), tout simplement qu’il apprenne et suive son exemple. Etre bon, travailler, ne pas trop faire confiance, juste ce qu’il faut, et ne pas tout donner. Savoir garder pour soi également.
Je vais conclure, en mon nom, et lui souhaite de continuer comme cela. Je suis ravie d’avoir eu le privilège de faire la connaissance d’Arun. Une personne honnête, humble, et vrai, comme il est rare de rencontrer de nos jours. MERCI.

Arun : son vrai nom est Prak Phirun, mais trop difficile à prononcer pour Ermine, elle lui a donné ce surnom, qu’il aime et emploie avec plaisir.
Is it possible to have confidence in life when we come from the street ?
How can we believe in life if chances are limited ?
Is it possible to believe that a futur is possible, that some day we will have a house, a car, a nice place to leave, and build a family ?
How can we imagine life if we come from a miserable neighborhood ?
It is POSSIBLE, and the following story is a proof that everything is possible. Here comes Arun (Prak Phirun) life.
Arun is now 37 years old, and he devoted the beginning of his life to become who is he now. And this has not been easy.
Arun is the oldest of a family of seven kids, his father, had two wives, and he was part of the richest families in a village, working in the wood industry. They were leaving in a nice house, and life was fun and easy. But because of a betrayal, he lost everything. No more money, no more house, very hard to leave decently.
This was in 1995, they had to move to Oudong, outside Phnom Penh, 40km in the province. And because he wanted to help his father, he started a small business at school.
During his free time, he was collecting cow bones, was selling them, in order to buy toys, so that he could sell them at school to other kids, who had more money than him. (very intelligent, very pragmatic). Arun was working really hard at school and was always part of the four best if not the ONE.
When Arun was 10 years old, he had to walk for 15 kilometers, four time a day to go to school. It was really hard, long road, under the blazing sun or under the rain. There was not much food either, and it was a hard fight for him to study.
This time was really difficult for him, and he needs sometimes to recover during his speech. His eyes are shining, and it’s difficult for him to keep on talking……………………..
And this for 4 years. But he knew that education was the only possibility for him to get out of the poverty.
At that moment he just made himself a promise :
« I WILL NEVER LEAVE THAT AGAIN, AND I AM GONA TRY MY BEST TO GET OUT OF IT AND HAVE A REAL GOOD LIFE »
His father, seeing how much Arun wanted to get out of this, gave him 10000 riels (equivalent today for very few money but representing at that time a nice amount) to go to Phnom Penh and stays with one of his uncle, working as a security guard, in an Airlines Company, possession of the Royal Family.
He had a place to sleep, but during the day, he had to go out. To have something to eat, he used 300 riels (0.10 cts today) from money every day to grab something to eat.
And day after day, because he was doing all kind of small jobs in the Company : cut the grass, wash the cars, clean the floor, etc…. Three months after, having been recognized by Mr. B…. whom proposed him a job as a security guard.
He devoted his salary for his education. From a total of 40 dollars, it was divided in :
- 15 dollars to eat
- 18 dollars to learn to speak, read, and write english
- And the rest to buy books ( he was dreaming to have a Khmer/English dictionary at that time, and he made a deal with one of the other driver, to clean his car for a month to get this treasure !!!!!)
He didn’t had to pay additional expenses for a place to leave, because he was leaving at the same place with one of the member of the Royal Family.
In 1999, Arun was 18, he started to work as security guard, for the Royal Family, itself. Two years later, he was assigned to be the security guard of Ermine Norodom. This is how he met her.
Until 2002, at that time, having been recognized for his abilities of analysis, understanding, intelligence, and his knowledge in English, he had been granted with a post in the Administration. Then He found another job, in another Company, as a Sale Agent, for two additional years.
After that, he worked in a Pizza Company, started in the delivery services, continue in learning how to make pizza, finishing in the sales, and then quit.From 2008-2009 : he was in charge of marketing at the English Learning School ;From 2009-2010 : he was working at Restaurant Soksabay ( but this time was difficult, too much noise, too much drinking people), Arun was not meant to work in a place like that.During all this period, he was still working as security guard, and it is in 2011 when Ermine opens her Hotel, « Hotel le Marais » that his life becomes really « fun ».
When the Hotel closed, Arun decided then, to start his own business in property sales agent. At first it was hard, but after sometimes, with a lot of work, it was better. He is a hard worker, believing in him and not looking after working hours.
Now he is a « boss » of 13 people, giving them a chance to have a better life. He trains them, he follows them, give them advices, and teach them how to solve the problem and how to satisfy the client but never to solve a problem for them.
He is proud, and really he can be. Today, he as a wife, a boy, a house, a car. He is smiling and he is willing to have more money to be able to do more for charity.
He is working for Shanty Town Spirit, since the beginning. He is working with Ermine as Administrative Director, and he is always there when and as soon as she needs.
He says :
« people in Shanty Town listen to me, because I understand them. Kids and teenagers can have an idea of real life can be if they are working hard at school ».
He wish that he could do more for them.
Ermine when she talk about him : « we are working well together, he as a big heart, and he paying attention in all people surrounding him, he wish to bring happiness to them » ;
Arun says the same about Ermine, as she is a person with a big heart also, who gives without asking anything in return.
For the futur, for his son, nickname « stephane », full name SAHASSBUTH (power), he wants him to follow what he has done. Being nice, and hard working, and like to work, being trustful but not too much. Being able to give but keeping a little part for him also.
Personaly, I want to thank him, for having the opportunity to meet such a nice person. Real person, humble, honest, as it is very rare to meet. Thank you Arun.
N.B : Arun is not his real name, it is a nickname given by Ermine, because Prak Phirun was difficult for her to pronounce. He enjoys to be called like that.
