About Us

OUR ACTIVITIES

The scope of our work is to support our community members in becoming more self-sustainable using the tools and the services that we provide with a view of moving out of poverty.

In 2016 we happily serviced:
  • 62 children, 18 parents and 6 elders
  • Paid for 50 extra educational classes for 8 children
  • Provided 80 school uniform sets (uniform, books, pens etc.)
  • Successfully linked two adolescents to vocational training who were intent on dropping out of mainstream school
  • Distributed over 3 tons of rice within the community along with various groceries
  • Maintained weekly visits

                                                           OUR KEY OBJECTIVES
  • To maximise the community’s access to essential healthcare services (dentistry, child/maternal/seniors health, any ongoing treatment if required) as well as basic hygiene and nutrition needs.
  • To improve the living conditions of the families by financing the refurbishment of their homes (roof, electricity, water etc.).
  • To help community members overcome barriers to employment and education by providing vocational training and financing access to public and private school.
  • To improve the well-being of the families by offering activities (fun outings, sports, artistic workshops etc.). We collaborate with other NGOs within the existing social welfare network to achieve our objectives.
  • In accordance with the contributions of our donors as well as the hardwork of our team, Shanty Town Spirit make sure to only select members in this of the slum communites who show they are willing to help themselves before benefiting from our programs.
  • The scope of our work is to support community members in achieving independence through their own self-empowerment with the goal of being able to support themselves and their families.

Education:
  •  We fund children to go to public or private school and/or vocational training. We also cover the costs of school supplies, uniforms and extra tuition if required.
  • Shanty Town Spirit does not offer band aid support to these families. Instead we work on challenging the poverty mindset to discourage learn helplessness that is often common among communities in countries with a long international aid history.
  • We encourage self-determination and empowerment to move beyond just surviving and into thriving. We do this through educating parents on the importance of earning a living, educating their children and maintaining health and personal hygiene.

Healthcare/ Hygiene:
  • Although Cambodia has made progress within its public healthcare system by offering free care to children aged under 16 years, and discount cards to those living below the poverty line, the costs of healthcare can still remain out of reach for some impoverished families like those that Shanty Town Spirit supports.
  •  We cover the gaps in those costs along with health checkups, dental care and ongoing treatment, that is not accessible through the public health system. We also provide personal hygiene products on an ongoing basis.

Residential & Nutrition:
We help make repairs and fix existing homes, with the goal of making them safer. We provide essential food stables every month to ensure families are being fed.

Recreational Activities:
Kids need to be kids! We often take the children out to engage in fun recreational activities as well as bringing some entertaining activities into the communities. We emphasize camaraderie and encourage all children to participate and empower and respect each other.
