Vidéo : The Supreme - Burgers & Cheesecakes works with Shanty Town Spirit

Message from The Supreme - Burgers & Cheesecakes

We are proud to announce our collaboration with Shanty Town Spirit every Wednesday. To give back, on our scale, what the country has given us.

As mentioned, we work with the association Shanty Town Spirit that takes care of the basic nutrional food on a weekly basis such as drinking water, rice and dry food. We are aware that what you saw in the video do not represent a sustainable base of food. Our small contribution is mainly based on Education in order to be able to send kids to private school instead of looking for something to sell or to eat into the garbage.

Our visit was focused on another purpose, which is to spend good time, to have some fun with them, like anyone else, and to remind them that they are not forgotten. Some detractors do not have the long-term vision. But if they do and want to know more about the process to help many other families as we do, please feel free to contact Shanty Town Spirit.
The Supreme Team.

Shanty Town wishes to deepfully thanks he Supreme - Burgers & Cheesecakes

Phnom Penh - Photo Documentary : Living with the dead in Chhar Ampil

It's a small shanty town at the entrance of Phnom Penh city, a place that the locals call Chaar Ampil. Nothing is very original nor very new, except that the huts and shacks are built among the graves of a Vietnamese cemetery. A dozen families live there, victims of exclusion, poverty, or bad luck after they try to travel from their province to find a better life in the capital city of Cambodia. Photographs by Christophe Gargiulo.

Life among graves
With its population growing fast, Phnom Penh  struggles to propose housing for residents with very low incomes, thus they are several thousands who have taken up residence around cemeteries, creating small communities, villages in the city in which prostitution, abuse, drugs and diseases become common.

Kids play on graves while adults get busy
Inside this community, the presence of the dead does not seem to affect children who smile quite easliy. In Chhar Ampil, children play around graves, climb over them while some adults use the tiles around the graves to wash clothes or to dry rice and meat.

Kids from the community
The way these people can handle the presence of graves or even show some indifference could perhaps be explained by a very different conception of death by Cambodians. With prevalence of Buddhism, cremations are by far the most common fate for dead people in the kingdom. Christian burial tomb and are therefore an entirely different or even unknown concept for them.

Some children from the community go to school, others don't
Some residents have even used the tombs as an extension of their home, setting up a garden or some seats to make it a relaxing place. As to evoke ghosts, a young resident with tattooed forearms, sitting on his motorcycle and smoking cheap cigarettes laughs and says: '' ... It's true we think about it a little at first, but after, we deal with it. If the spirits of the dead buried there are among us, we disturb them, they don't disturb us...''.

Smiling kid sitting on a grave
Only a few have the chance to go to the neighborhood school, some families earn enough money to feed them and to provide food and clothes, but they don't make enough money to rent a proper shelter. If some have jobs, the most common activity is waste collection, work on construction sites, but also prostitution that help some families to survive. However, many girls and mothers are HIV-positive and get some support with regular visits from a social worker, Maïra, from Brazil, who decided to contribute to try to improve the daily life of a family whose mother is HIV positive.

News : Shanty Town helps to promote aquaponics kōyaproject

This week, Princess Ermine Norodom, HRH Norodom Naravong, and HRH Norodom Narithipong paid a visit to Prek Pra school in the outskirts of Phnom Penh. There, Michael Hensel and Tamie Tran, from the kōyaproject, show the work that's been done to implement the first pilot Aquaponics unit. This pilot project is the first step towards a more ambitious operation aiming at developing this kind of small scale farms around the kingdom.

Aquaponics is a  system that combines conventional aquaculture (raising fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics in a symbiotic environment. In traditional aquaculture, excretions from the animals being raised can accumulate in the water and increase toxicity.

In an aquaponic system, water from an aquaculture system is fed to a hydroponic system where the by-products are broken down by Nitrifying bacteria into nitrates, which are utilized by the plants as nutrients, and the water is then recirculated back to the aquaculture system.

A wonderful evening with our children from Boeung Trabek community

This night was a great time with the children. We brought them from their community to a dinner, at Domino's Pizza. It was a great pleasure for us to share an evening with the them, simple dinner that became a special night for all of us. For some of the kids, it was their first time at a Pizzas restaurant.  It's always amazing to to share happiness with them. Seeing them united and happy is so wonderful.

Pour certains cela était la première pizza de leur vie. C’est toujours merveilleux de leur faire vivre ce genre de joie et de la partager avec eux.  Les voir unis et heureux est toujours fantastique pour toute notre équipe.

NGO - Solidarity : Ermine Norodom, a princess heart

Ermine Norodom is a French national who used to work in fashion and design. Over the years, Ermine felt the need to change her life, to get back to essential things and then to focus on a more humanitarian-oriented action. The discovery of the kingdom of Cambodia, a country she will visit repeatedly, made a strong impression on her. Amazed, but also motivated by the emotion aroused by this country and the encounters she made there, Ermine Norodom quickly felt that she should get involved into the life of this beautiful, but still affected by poverty, country. Mother of two and married since 2003 to Prince Norodom Narithipong, she definitely settled in Cambodia in September 2010.

Since then, Ermine Norodom got deeply involved and put much energy into the "Bang Paoun Project", a NGO that actively helps the children of the poorest areas and slums of Phnom Penh.

The desire to give and the will to share brought her to spend most of her free time with this association as a volunteer. Later on, Ermine Norodom created her own NGO that bears her name and launched the Shanty Town Project, an initiative aimed at helping ten families of the poorest neighborhoods of Boeung Trabek, located south of Phnom Penh. This NGO basically supports the health and children's education while also providing support to mothers in their daily lives. Involved with a lot of energy and compassion to fulfill the basic needs of these families but willing to help other communities too, Ermine Norodom recently extended her network to other areas of Cambodia, and got quickly involved into helping some families and disadvantaged kids from Kandal Province (housing and education project), in Takeo with The NGO Mercy (Education and training for kids).

Acclaimed for her action by other NGO managers, Ermine Norodom also coordinates some new programs in Cambodia such as the The kōya an aquaponics project that plans to work with local and international aquaponics experts to build small and inexpensive aquaponics systems in schools in the kingdom and worldwide. Ermine is also building a partnership with Huy Kattia, another devoted woman. Those two actually created Shanty Town International in order to facilitate the development of Shanty Town Spirit. Ermine Norodom also owns the boutique Le Marais Paris Fashion in Aeon Mall in Phnom Penh where some of the profits go to her charity programs.

Van Syleang will be back in school in September !

We lived a very important moment for this young boy, Van Syleang, we know him since six years. After some issues with his teacher; he was not admitted at school anymore despite his efforts. As you know the scholarship of the children is our main goal, so we actually worked hard to find a solution for this young man.

Finally, we found an agreement with PSE, they admitted Van Syleang from September and for the rest of his studies. He also realized during this visit that he wanted to work as a chef in the future, a training proposed by PSE. We hope we will continue to work with PSE in the future, and that this young man will realize his dreams thanks to this joint work.  We want to thanks Pour un Sourire d'Enfant - Cambodia again.
