News : Shanty town team visits Mercy Organization
Last month, Shanty Town Spirit Team visited the association Mercy Organization, a small association working in the education field and located in Snor village, Daunkeo district in Takeo province ( southwest of Cambodia). The purpose of this visit was to inquire about the needs of this Ngo created in 2010 by a Khmer teacher, Keo Savorn. The objectives of this NGO are to assist vulnerable children and those who are victims of poverty, abuse, violence and neglect. As Keo says : ‘’…In spite of NGOs and royal government efforts to eradicate poverty and abuse, to improve the quality of teaching by creating vocational training centers in some provinces, there are still some areas, small villages, where kid are neglected and who don’t attend school…’’.
Ermine Norodom and Arun (Shanty Town Spirit - Ermine Norodom Association) brought school supplies to the kids of Mercy Organization. |
At the moment, Keo Savorn, a very dedicated team leader is assisted by five volunteers, Moang Ramya, the deputy director, Srey Nick, Kob Panit, Ring Chanthourn and Norn Sophorn who are teachers. The NGO actually operates with a thin budget provided by Keo himself. He is also the one who provided housing and material to teach to the kids.

Mercy organization provides shelters for disadvantaged kids from the area and classic school curriculum plus agricultural training, sports and counselling. Actually, the Mercy Organization welcomes children from six to seventeen years old, all coming from poor families living in communities around the village. The NGO center provides housing for more than a hundred students shared in five rooms.

In spite of tremendous efforts to run this NGO, Kea faces many difficulties as he is the only provider for the association and his teacher’s salary is quite short to reach the goals and ambitions of this project. As Keo explains: ‘’…I don’t have enough budget to run this project as needed, I could be much more comfortable if I had more help to support the Center activities and to help the kids. The estimation needs reach around 50 000 USD for three years and that’s why we actually appeal for charity sponsors, donors, partner organizations and other communities who could help…’’.
