Fabulous time in Shanty Town

Last year during five weeks, we had the great opportunity to have one of our best intern that we never had before : Mathieu Membrez, age 18 ; coming from Switzerland.

Mathieu told me that this internship was one of the greatest experience in his life.

Before, he was just having a normal life, studying, with wonderful parents, in a good area in Geneva. But one of his dream was to travel for a human association in some part of the world.

Meet people who had nothing, and be aware of their life couldn’t be compare to his.

Being able to help the poor communities as much as he could, and offer them his help his, during the time he was in Cambodia.

In July 2019, he had the chance to make his dream become a reality.

He came during 5 weeks in Cambodia helping Shanty town spirit Ermine Norodom Association. Taking part as much as he could in the association, providing people with what they need, (sanitary products, soaps, rice, etc..) He discovered that those people had not much in their life but had such a great heart.

He went with Ermine and other interns during various missions to the Shanty Town Spirit he was helping in buying sanitary products, and deliver them to the communities.

- He took this opportunity to take pictures, in order to use them after for the Shanty Town Blog.

- He had also been in charged of writing 11 short stories for the Shanty Town Spirit’s blog.

During those 5 weeks, it has been an incredible and unforgettable experience for him.

As he said « First in my way of thinking. Having seeing so much poverty with my own eyes, and being able to see the differences all over the world ».

« It was a little bit difficult at the beginning but it was such a wonderful experience.

For him, after having such experience, helped him increase the confidence in himself, and realize how lucky he was being able to follow Shanty Town Spirit Project.

He also admitted, that the first time in a Shanty Town, was very difficult and disorienting for him. How could people leave there ? but those people are just amazing, the families in the slum have such a great heart, emotional heart.

What he enjoyed the most was going to meet the communities of the slums and visiting centers that shanty Town is helping, being able to see that people with nothing are so pride to show me what they have. They do have practically nothing, as we can say from our point of view and way of living : how can they leave with so little? They are amazing and happy with what they have.

- during his internship, he also took part of the distribution of food, rice, etc… and was very proud and happy to do it.

« I have a big regret for the moment is that I am not gonna be able to go back sooner enough to Phnom Penh, to help Ermine and Maira witch do a such a great work.

I keep a very good memory of what I did with Shanty Town Spirit, I had a very good experience of life and more for me. I took, part of so manies different activities , and I really thanks the people I met for the great opportunities offered to me.

When I left Phnom Penh after 5 weeks, I said I am sure of it, one day I will go back there and continue the work with Shanty Town Spirit and see again all those wonderful person I met.

Shanty Town Spirit is a wonderful Association who work with the families of the communities in te slum. Actions, works, represent a very great amount of work and they do succeed in what they do.

On last thank you to Princess Ermine Norodom, I am looking forward to go back again there as soon as possible.

ART ACTIVITY IN SHANTY TOWN With Terry Douglas and Unseen Youth

Wonderful afternoon with the kids in one of our Shanty Town.

It is for the 3rd year now that we receive the visit of the Pastor Terry Douglas together with the Unseen Youth Group. Visit around arts, body painting, dancing, singing.

It is a real pleasure for the kids to take part of those activities. They recognized Terry Douglas and the Group. A very nice welcome had been reserved for them.

Ces Bébés qui amènent la lumière au sein de la famille / Babies enlighten in the bossom of the families

Qui a-t-il de plus merveilleux que l’attente et la venue au monde d’un bébé dans un foyer ?

Tous les parents désirant un enfant, vivent cette expérience avec le cœur léger et heureux. Il en est de même pour les mamans dans les bidons villes, ou dans les foyers pauvres autour de Phnom Penh.

Shanty Town Spirit, soutient ces femmes enceintes, autant que possible.

Certaines d’entre elles viennent spontanément vers nous pour savoir si nous pouvons les aider. Il n’y a jamais de promesse formelle faite, mais le maximum est entrepris pour pouvoir leur fournir une aide. Ces enfants sont désirés mais ce n’est pas pour cela que c’est facile. Il en est de meme dans n’importe quel autre foyer.

Nous allons donc à la rencontre de la famille, sachant que notre aide est soumise à deux conditions :

Les parents doivent travailler, et
Les enfants doivent aller à l’école

Nous regardons leur lieu de vie, et essayons d’apporter une amélioration quand il est nécessaire.

Nous essayons de suivre ces mamans au cours de leur grossesse, leur fournir l’argent pour les frais de santé éventuels, ou nous les envoyons dans les hôpitaux spécialisés quand il le faut. Mais notre joie est surtout de voir ce petit être apparaitre dans la famille.

C’est alors que nous pouvons leur fournir un kit de naissance (d’une valeur de 150 USD), qui comprend un certain nombre de choses indispensables pour ce nouveau-né :

Un matelas
Une baignoire
Une moustiquaire
De la layette
Deux couverture
Un doudou
Du savon, talc, shampoing
Et des vitamines pour les mamans qui allaitent

Toutefois si la maman ne peut allaiter, certaines sont malades (Sida, tuberculose) nous essayons de leur fournir du lait de façon régulière.

Nous suivons le nouveau-né, et essayons de faire en sorte que la famille soit bien entourée.

Il nous est toujours délicat lors de ces naissances de refuser, car quand nous prenons un nouveau-né en charge, nous prenons le reste de la famille également. Mais cela se passe bien. Les mamans sont heureuses, très maternelles, et les papas sont très impliqués dans leur rôle de chef de famille. Nous ne rencontrons pas que très peu d’échec.

Tout le monde est ravi et heureux de cette nouvelle vie. Les familles sont très unies, et lorsque les deux parents travaillent, la grand-mère prend très souvent le relais pour s’occuper de ses petits-enfants, afin de permettre à la maman de reprendre son travail (soit petite boutique, soit femme de ménage ou à l’usine). Les papas quant à eux sont souvent soit tuk tuk, travailleur sur les chantiers, ou dans le gardiennage de sécurité.

D’où viennent ces mamans ?

Nous avons des mamans :

- qui viennent de province (ou cela est plus difficile pour travailler)

- des mamans des bidons villes

- des mamans en ville

- et des mamans qui sont en prisons

Pour ces dernières nous travaillons en partenariat avec l’Association « Il Nodo », créée par Martina Carnetta (http://www.ilnodoonlus.org/EN/progettien.html)

Ces femmes ont le droit de sortir pendant trois jours pour aller accoucher, et également à ces dernières nous leur fournissons le kit de naissance, dès que nous pouvons le faire.

Nous essayons d’améliorer le quotidien de ces familles, un bébé doit rester une joie, un partage, une lumière nouvelle au sein de la famille, et rester le symbole d’un couple qui s’aime.

Babies enlighten in the bossom of the families

There is nothing more wonderful than waiting for a new baby to come in a family.

All parents whom really want a baby, are living this experience with lots of light and love. Feeling happy and looking forward to the new baby to arrive. It is exactly the same for all the mummys in Shanty Town, or in poor families in and around Phnom Penh.

Shanty Town Spirit, help those women as much as it can.

Some of them come directly to us, wondering if we can provide them with some help. We never promise anything, but we try our best to give them some help. Those children are wanted but it’s not because of that, that it is easy. This is exactly the same for all others in the world.

We go and meet the family, bearing in mind that the couple have to fit in with two conditions :

Parents should work
Other children should go to school, when there are others

We are checking out their way of leaving, trying to improve their living conditions when necessary.

We try to follow those women during their pregnancy, providing them money for health check up, when need be, or sending them to appropriate hospital when we have to. But our joy is to have this new baby coming alive.

So then we can provide them with a full baby kit (approximately 150 USD) which contains a number of indispensable things for baby born :

A mattress
A bath tube
A mosquito kit
Baby clothes
Two blankettes
A Doudou
Soap, baby powder, schampoo
And vitamines for the mummies who are breast feedings

However if the mother can breast feed, some of them are sick (Aids, Tuberculosis) we try to give them baby milk on regular basis.

We ensure that the family and the new born receive enough help.

Is is always very delicate to refuse to support those births, because if we start to help a family with the baby born, we have to keep on following the rest of the family. But usually everything goes on well. The mother are happy, and taking good care of their babies, the fathers are very concerned about their families, and they do keep their father role in a serious way. We did face very few failure.

Everybody is more than happy in those situations. Families are very close to each other, and it very often happens to be than when the two parents are working, it is the Grand mother who is taking care of the new born and the others kids. This allows, the mother to go back to work (small shop, cleaning lady, working at the factory). Fathers are most of the time : tuk tuk drive, security guard, or workers on constructions sites.

Those womens are able to go out for three days for the delivery. We do also provide them with the baby kit, as often as we can.

We do try to make their life better, a baby should remain a joy, happiness, sharing.

Portrait: Little Pheakdey

Pheakdey joined the Shanty Town Spirit program when he was 8 years old. When we first met him, he and his younger brother were under the care of his elderly grandmother as his parents were away working in Thailand.

Thanks to the sponsorship of a donor, Pheakdey attends school and his elderly grandmother stopped collecting rubbish as a means of income because we were able to give her a monthly allowance. She used to spend all day collecting plastic bottles to earn a minuscule 10 cents for every kilogram.
Supreme Burger restaurant, based in Phnom Penh, offers 20 percent of their takings each Wednesday to support our program. Pheakdey and Shanty Town Spirit are very grateful for this ongoing generous support.

Recently, Pheakdey’s grandmother passed away and we paid for her funeral. His parents have since returned home along with a new little sister. They continue to work while we sponsor Pheakdey’s education. He continues to try very hard with his studies and be a good boy for his parents and protector to his infant sister.

Solidarity : Shanty Town Spirit will Help Abandoned Mothers

Two sisters actually try to survive in the shantytown of Boeng Trabek in Phnom Penh, Mao Srey Pich and Sreymom. Mao Srey Pich has three children, Srey Leap (3 yo), Srey Nit (10 yo) and a baby of three weeks. With her husband, Mao Srey Pich used to work as a ragpicker around the streets of Phnom Penh, in order to support the three children, and to pay the tuition of the elder Srey Nit. Unfortunately, when she was five months pregnant, the cancer took away her husband, leaving her alone with her three children. The young mother decided to return to work alone, a job that allows her to earn only a few dollars per day... she also decided to ask the grandmother to take care of the youngest...

Sreymom sad story is quite similar, except that it's not cancer that left her alone with her children but her husband, violent and unscrupulous person who left home and kidnapped one of the three children. Sreymom will also go back into the rag business. Both brave sisters are neighbors and try to help each other, but their little earnings barely help to support their small family and the tuition. Both families also live in deplorable conditions of hygiene...This is why Shanty Town Spirit, the slum family support program, managed by Ermine Norodom, will help them through the supply of food and items, and by paying the tuition of the little Srey Nit.

NGO - Crowdfunding : Solidarity For Children of Phnom Penh Slums

Solidarity For Children of Phnom Penh Slums

As the new school year in full swing throughout the kingdom, some children from Phnom Penh slums need some help. The Ermine Norodom Association is funding the tuition, and supports the children's families. However new children are now being supported by Shanty Town Spirit program, they are more than fifty in all. If Shanty Town Spirit program children could join the school benches, they are desperately short of supplies and clothing. Ermine Norodom calls your generosity to fund:

One hundred uniforms. Unit price = $ 9, for fifty children = $ 900.
Fifty school backpacks. Unit price = $ 9, for fifty children = $ 450.
School supplies, notebooks, pens ... etc. = $ 300
Fifty pairs of shoes like sneakers. Unit price = $ 7, for fifty children = $ 450.
A total of $ 2,000.

Solidarité pour les Enfants des Bidonvilles de Phnom Penh

Alors que la rentrée des classes bat son plein dans tout le royaume, certains enfants des bidonvilles ont besoin d’aide. L’association Ermine Norodom finance actuellement les frais de scolarité, et apporte son soutien aux familles des enfants. Toutefois de nouveaux enfants sont pris en charge, ils sont aujourd’hui, entre les anciens et les nouveaux, une cinquantaine au total. Si les enfants du programme Shanty Town Spirit ont pu rejoindre les bancs de l’école, ils manquent cruellement de fournitures et de vêtements.
